President

Mike Smith

Mike has over 40 years of experience in the insurance industry, beginning his career as a life insurance agent right after college. He co-founded one of the first independent marketing groups and developed an innovative Agent Owned Reinsurance Company, giving agents equity in their business. Mike created Vital Signs, the leading carrier analysis tool, and founded New West Insurance in 1987 to build a premier service organization for high-end producers. From 1990 to 2005, he was on the Board of Directors for Elar LLC, which generated over 100 million in profit for its partners. He consistently qualifies for the International Forum, MDRT, and Top of The Table and holds a CLU designation.

Underwriting Director

Pam Smith

Pam has been active in insurance management for over 35 years. She began her career in life insurance management in 1978 in the new business and underwriting departments of a major life insurance company. Pam was later promoted to a management position in which she was responsible for overseeing one of the industry’s largest annuity departments, with a staff of 90 employees. She joined New West Insurance at its inception in 1987 and manages the administrative staff. Pam has extensive experience in underwriting and her knowledge is complemented by excellent negotiating skills that allow New West Insurance to consistently deliver exceptional underwriting results. Pam is involved in overseeing all aspects of case management, agent contracting, commissions and sales administration.

Underwriting Manager

Kayla Runyan

Kayla is originally from Sun Valley and joined New West in 2006. In addition to her sales and business background, she completed her A.A. degree in Nursing in 2013 and is a licensed R.N. She currently heads the new business department, processing all informal cases and assisting with medical underwriting challenges. Her medical and underwriting knowledge, along with her skill at working with carriers allows her to get our producers unparalleled results.​

Administrative Assistant

Valery Walker

A native of the Pacific Northwest, Valery was a frequent visitor in Sun Valley before relocating here in 2017. She joined our team in 2019 as an administrative assistant, with over 30 years of experience in the insurance industry. In addition to providing broad support to the entire team, she also handles all internal insurance licensing functions and commission processing. Her strong client focus, solid organizational skills, and careful attention to detail combine to make her an excellent resource for our producers and the New West team.

New Business Case Manager

Kellie Thompson

Kellie Thompson has lived in Sun Valley, Idaho for 29 years and has over 16 years of administrative and service management experience. She joined New West in 2017 as the New Business Case Manager and handles all aspects of the formal application process for our producers. With over 6 years of application processing experience her proficiency greatly assists in the underwriting and policy placement process.
